I have started a new way of reading the “paper” in Japan. I have come to realise that the news about Japan, in both the foreign and domestic press, is greatly limited to what appears in the standard Japanese news. Even foreign news sites like Reuters give a lot more Japanese news than what appears in English.

How I read the news:

1. Go to a major news site like www.jiji.com

2. Go to www.translate.google.com, choose “website” in the tab, and drop in the url of the news site. This will bring up all the headlines in English.

3. While you can get a good gist of the news from these English stories translated from Google, copying and pasting into DeepL will give you a better, more accurate read. Or, better yet, add the DeepL extension for Google Chrome, which will allow you to simply copy and right-click.

For 1,200 yen per month you can also get the DeepL Pro Starter account which will translate the website directly into English using DeepL which will save you some cutting and pasting.

If you want to know more about Japan, you will find a whole lot more this way and it doesn’t really take a lot more time.
